In this episode:  Devin Hutchins, Lindsay Winthrop, Sharlene Hudson, Gregory Hudson, Frankie Frame, John Hudson, Thomasina Mason, Russ Matthews, Charlie Winthrop Harrison

PREVIOUSLY ON ANOTHER WORLD
  • Devin Hutchins bought land from Donna Love where the Harbor Club stood and is opening Club Freedom in its place.  Donna kissed Devin to make Michael jealous, but the kiss seems to have ignited something within them.  Donna later came to the club and Devin and Donna kissed again, but this time Lindsay Winthrop saw them.
  • Gregory Hudson was involved in a 3 car accident on Route 17, which has aggravated a previous back injury that he was paralyzed from.  To ease the pain, Gregory was prescribed painkillers.  Gregory has developed an addiction to painkillers and is now getting them off the streets.  A drug dealer has given him a heavily encrypted, black market website where Gregory can purchase synthetic drugs.
  • Frankie is looking into the background of Brianna Jameson, whom they think may be responsible for the attempts on Sharlene's life.
  • Dr. Thomasina Mason was named Chief of Staff at Bay City Medical Center.  Dr. Russ Matthews and Dr. John Hudson were not chosen.  Since then, Dr. Matthews has questioned some of Dr. Mason's decisions, and Dr. Mason has not taken kindly to this.  Dr. Mason accused Dr. Matthews of not wanting to report to a black woman.
  • Dr. Mason hired KC Burrell for a Public Relations internship instead of Charlie Winthrop Harrison.  Charlie decided to ask Dr. Mason why she was not hired, and now Charlie is overhearing the reason.

PART 1

AT THE CENTER, DEVIN IS ON HIS CELL PHONE.
Billy Flynn as Devin Hutchins

DEVIN:  They’re coming in what…fifteen minutes?  They weren’t supposed to be coming for another hour.  Alright I’ll be right there.

DEVIN PRESSES END CALL AND PUTS THE PHONE IN HIS POCKET, TURNS AROUND, AND SEES LINDSAY.
Kate Mansi as Lindsay Winthrop

DEVIN:  Hey.
LINDSAY:  Hey…uh…hi.  Looks like you’re in a bit of a hurry.
DEVIN:  I just got a call from the state inspectors.  They’re coming to the club for the final walkthrough.
LINDSAY:  Make sure you’re up to code?
DEVIN:  Yep.  After this, I’ll be able to open.
LINDSAY:  How exciting?  Club Freedom huh?
DEVIN:  Yeah.  Hopefully you’ll be able to come.  In fact, just text me and I’ll let you in the VIP Section.

LINDSAY FLASHES BACK TO SEEING DEVIN KISSING DONNA LOVE (EPISODE 284).

LINDSAY:  Don’t forget about my boyfriend.
DEVIN:  You drive a hard bargain.
LINDSAY:  Gregory’s an important part of my life.  If you let me in VIP, then you gotta let Gregory in, too.  In fact I…think I’m gonna ask him to move in with me.
DEVIN:  That’s…that’s great.  Well I’m gotta get to the club.
LINDSAY:  Okay good luck.
DEVIN:  And…both of you can come in VIP at the opening.
LINDSAY:  Thank you.

AT THE FARM, SHARLENE WALKS INTO THE LIVING ROOM WHILE GREGORY COMES DOWNSTAIRS.
Robert Scott Wilson as Gregory Hudson

Anna Holbrook as Sharlene Hudson

SHARLENE:  Hey sweetheart.
GREGORY:  I was just uh headed out.
SHARLENE:  Studying?
GREGORY:  Yeah that.  Where’s dad?
SHARLENE:  He had to work.  How’s your back?
GREGORY:  It’s feeling better.  Maybe it was just the residual effects from the accident.
SHARLENE:  Good I’m…I’m very happy to hear that you’re feeling better.
GREGORY:  Yeah that nurse helped me.
SHARLENE:  Nurse?  What nurse?
GREGORY:  Brianna.
SHARLENE:  What?

SHARLENE FOCUSES HER ATTENTION ON GREGORY.

SHARLENE:  How exactly did she help you?
GREGORY:  The other night.  When I went to the hospital.
SHARLENE:  What did she do?  Steal some painkillers out of the hospital cabinet?  You listen to me!  You stay the hell away from her!
GREGORY:  Why?  What’s going on?
SHARLENE:  We don’t have any proof yet but…she could be the one who has been trying to kill me.
GREGORY:  Are you serious?
SHARLENE:  And we think she could be connected to Taylor.
GREGORY:  Wow I’ll…do that.
SHARLENE:  Be careful out there.  If she tries to approach you or anything you let me and your father right away.
GREGORY:  I will.  I’m gettin’ outta here.

FRANKIE APPEARS.
Alice Barrett Mitchell as Frankie Frame
FRANKIE:  That may not be the case.
SHARLENE:  What do you mean?
FRANKIE:  After we visited Maggie I did a full background check on her.  Brianna Jameson came up clean.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

AT THE HOSPITAL, JOHN IS SITTING AT HIS DESK LOOKING ON HIS OFFICE COMPUTER.  HE’S SCROLLING THROUGH AND HE NOTICES SOMETHING.

David Forsyth as Dr. John Hudson

JOHN (reading his email):  Reminder.  Appointment with urologist Dr. Stanley...today.

JOHN LOOKS AT THE POST IT NOTE ON HIS DESK WITH HIS PASSWORD “alwaysbemyson” WRITTEN ON IT.  HE IMMEDIATELY TEARS IT INTO FOUR PIECES AND TOSSES THEM INTO A WASTEBASKET.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Amelia Marshall as Dr. Thomasina Mason
Jed Allan as Dr. Russ Matthews

MEANWHILE, CHARLIE SLOWLY APPROACHES THE DOOR TO THOMASINA’S OFFICE, AND DECIDES TO LISTEN AS THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN RUSS AND THOMASINA ESCALATES.
Brittany Underwood as Charlie Winthrop Harrison

THOMASINA:  I only will consult on Mr. Graves’s treatment, not press releases.
RUSS:  You are clearly not qualified to run this hospital.
THOMASINA:  I’m sorry that you are still bitter over the board’s decision to choose me over you as Chief of Staff, but I have a theory as to why.
RUSS:  And what would that be?

THOMASINA FOLDS HER ARMS AND FACES RUSS.

THOMASINA:  Oh so you’re afraid to admit it, because I’m gonna say it.  You hate that you have to report to a black woman!

CHARLIE, WHO IS LISTENING OUTSIDE, OPENS HER MOUTH IN AMAZEMENT AFTER HEARING THOMASINA’S STATEMENT.

RUSS:  That’s the most ridiculous thing I ever heard!
THOMASINA:  Is it?
RUSS:  Are you accusing me of being a racist?
THOMASINA:  No Russ.  I don’t think you’re a racist, but even you have to admit there is institutionalized racism in a majority of corporations in this country.
RUSS:  That sounds cryptic.
THOMASINA:  I stood by and watched a friend of mine struggle to get work after she graduated with a 3.9 GPA from Medical School.  She’s a black woman, too.  I’m not gonna let any other person of color go through that as long as I am Chief of Staff.

CHARLIE STARTS TO LISTEN MORE INTENTLY OUTSIDE AS RUSS STARTS TO PIECE TOGETHER WHO THOMASINA IS TALKING ABOUT.

RUSS:  Who exactly are you referring to?  KC Burrell?

PART 2

AT THE HOSPITAL, JOHN IS IN AN EXAM ROOM AND DR STANLEY WALKS IN.

JOHN:  Thank you for meeting with me Dr. Stanley.
DR. STANLEY:  My pleasure.  You asked me to…run the sample you gave me and compare them to…
JOHN:  1991.
DR. STANLEY:  Believe me it wasn’t easy to have that archive dug up but they’re…they’re the same.
JOHN:  Low sperm count.
DR. STANLEY:  I’m afraid so.  The effects of Agent Orange left you sterile.
JOHN:  I was hoping that…my recent test results would be different from the old ones.
DR. STANLEY:  I’m sorry Dr. Hudson.  Have you told your wife?
JOHN:  No.  As far as she’s concerned…I am Gregory’s father.
DR. STANLEY:  Of course you are.  In every way that counts.  I think…maybe you should tell Sharlene.
JOHN:  No.  I’m never going to tell her.

IN THE LIVING ROOM, GREGORY IS ON HIS PHONE ON THE SATIN AVENUE BLACK MARKET WEBSITE TRYING TO ORDER SOME DRUGS, BUT HIS CREDIT CARD DECLINES.

GREGORY:  Damn!

GREGORY LOOKS DOWN AND SEES SHARLENE’S PURSE.  HE RUMMAGES THROUGH IT AND TAKES OUT HER CREDIT CARD.

GREGORY:  Sorry mom.

MEANWHILE SHARLENE AND FRANKIE ARE IN THE KITCHEN.

SHARLENE:  That’s impossible.
FRANKIE:  It’s like she never existed.
SHARLENE:  Well there’s got to be something out there that we can use against her.
FRANKIE:  That’s the problem.  Nobody has a record that clean.
SHARLENE:  No record of a school or a…a job.
FRANKIE:  The job at Bay City Medical Center and nursing school.
SHARLENE:  Brianna wasn’t born a few years ago though
FRANKIE:  There’s gotta be some kind of birth record or something.
SHARLENE:  It’s like she…doesn’t exist.
FRANKIE:  Wait a minute.  Maybe that’s it.  Brianna Jameson…might not be real.
SHARLENE:  If she’s not Brianna, then who is she, and how is she connected to Taylor Benson?
FRANKIE:  Did Taylor mention having any children?
SHARLENE:  Never.
FRANKIE:  Well I’ll keep digging.  I know we’re gonna get to the bottom of this.  If she’s the one trying to kill you, then we’re gonna stop her.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THOMASINA TURNS HER BACK TO RUSS AND TELLS HER STORY.

THOMASINA:  I have a friend…in California…an excellent doctor.  Deborah is a hard worker.  She worked harder than anyone in our class, which is why she got the GPA she did.  She put her all into her medical studies on top of being a wife and a mother.  We…stayed in touch after we graduated.  Many a nights she would call…and cry.  She had a such a difficult time finding work.  Now tell me why a black woman with a 3.9 GPA from medical school would end up running a non profit clinic in Santa Barbara when she could very well be the Chief of Staff at any hospital?
RUSS:  Maybe…maybe she wasn’t qualified.
THOMASINA:  Oh I looked into it.  The jobs she applied for went to candidates with lower GPAs than she had.
RUSS:  It’s more than a GPA Dr. Mason.
THOMASINA:  Of course it is.
RUSS:  What about her rotations and residencies?
THOMASINA:  The doctors she worked under recommended her white counterparts.  I felt for her.  We would meet in coffee shops and I would reassure her that she will find what she’s  looking for, and I said to myself that I would make a difference; I will not let one more black person go through what Deborah Boswell went through.
RUSS:  What are you saying?   That you didn’t hire Charlie Harrison for the Public Relations internship because she was white?

THOMASINA TURNS BACK AND FACES RUSS.

THOMASINA:  You’re damned right!

MEANWHILE, CHARLIE IS OUTSIDE AND HAS JUST HEARD WHAT THOMASINA HAS TOLD RUSS.  SHE STUMBLES AWAY FROM THE DOOR IN SHOCK, THEN SHE GRIMACES IN PAIN AND BENDS OVER WITH HER HAND ON HER STOMACH.

  1. O wow so juicy . A lot going on. So frankie and sharlene r doing background checks on taylor and shes clean. Now they gotta find out if she's a made up person. At least sharlene is onto her and can protect herself and her family.

Stunning story with john and a superb use of history with the agent orange stuff. He has low sperm count and now it calls into question Gregorys paternity. Hes gonna keep it to himself which i know will turn out to b a big mistake. But excellent story choice. Agent orange i know was very damaging to the vietnamese when it was used in that war. Im glad ur telling a story like this

Russ and thomasina had a good convo.i like that this is about race as it so evident in our current state of affairs. But now sina has admitted something she may not should have .she didnt hire charlie kuz shes white but that too is racism. Two wrongs dont make a right but i do understand sina wanna her our people. I know russ is gonna run with this.interesting to see where this goes.

Devin s club hasnt opened yet. But his triangle with lindsay and greg is in full bloom

And now greg is stealing money from his mom to buy pain killers which means obviously hes addicted. Ill b watching him to see how this effects him his actions and his relationships.

Great ep as so much is going on. I particularly like ur storylines currently. Good job!!

  2. Another great episode.

Gregory didn't realize Brianna was trouble, and now she's hooked him back on his pills. But that's the least of his troubles right now. There's no way John could be his father, and that could really put Gregory on a dark course.

I really liked your using the Agent Orange angle here. It's a good way to make there be no doubt, Grant is the father. A great story and a great use of unresolved history.

Thomasina and Russ continue to impress me. You understand both sides and I could see these scenes in my mind. Strong writing and great characterization. Thomasina's story about her friend really makes you feel for her, and you SNAP us back to the present when Russ asks her if Deborah's struggle influenced her decision re: KC vs Charlie.

Charlie knows she has to take action now. It's a great set up and I can't wait to see it play out.

    Another VERY strong episode.
