PART 1

Bryant Kramer

KC Burrell

BRYANT GOES INTO THE COFFEE SHOP AND KC STARTS TO HEAR LINDSAY AND CHARLIE’S CONVERSATION.

LINDSAY:  It’s a shame that you didn’t get that P.R. internship.
CHARLIE:  It is though.  Although I was clearly qualified to get it.  Probably more than the person who actually got the position.
LINDSAY:  You mean KC Burrell?

KC WALKS UP TO THEM.
Lindsay Winthrop

Charlie Winthop Harrison

KC:  That would be me.  I’m sorry that you think that I’m not qualified Charlie.
CHARLIE:  I didn’t…mean it like that.
KC:  Well how did you mean it?  I got the position fair and square.
CHARLIE:  I didn’t intend to imply that you weren’t qualified.
KC:  It sure sounded like that to me.
LINDSAY:  Charlie’s just a little confused as to why she didn’t get the internship.  You know it’s one of those things where you just think you have everything in the bag, and then you don’t.
KC:  It’s a great position.  I do enjoy although it does have its challenges.

BRYANT WALKS UP TO THEM.

BRYANT:  Here’s your latte.
KC:  Thank you.
BRYANT:  Hey Charlie.  Good to see you.
CHARLIE:  Hi.  Bryant right?
BRYANT:  Yes sir!
KC:  You guys know each other?
BRYANT:  The woman that raised me is her mother.  Frankie.
CHARLIE:  My mother raised you?
BRYANT:  Yeah she didn’t tell you?
CHARLIE:  No she…didn’t.  Did she raise you alone?

CHARLIE’S CELL PHONE RINGS AND SHE ANSWERS IT.

CHARLIE:  Hey hun…oh okay.  I can meet you.  Alright bye.

CHARLIE ENDS HER CALL.

CHARLIE:  I gotta go to the hospital.
LINDSAY:  Is everything okay?
CHARLIE:  Yeah.  That was Kirkland.  He told me that Bridget is going home and the family’s gonna meet up there.
LINDSAY:  I’m actually headed there, too.  Let’s go.
CHARLIE:  It was good to meet you KC.
KC:  Yeah.  Same here.
BRYANT:  We gotta catch up Charlie.
CHARLIE:  We sure do.

CHARLIE AND LINDSAY LEAVE.

KC:  I can’t believe she said what she said.   As if I wasn’t qualified to get the position.
BRYANT:  Are you talking about the internship?
KC:  I guess she was the only person who applied for the position.
BRYANT:  Look I’m…I’m sure it was just a misunderstanding.  I don’t think she meant it like that.  She didn’t even know that you were the one who got the job.
KC:  She just sounded so…
BRYANT:  Entitled?
KC:  Look I don’t wanna go down that rabbit hole with you.  No offense.

BRYANT SMILES.

BRYANT:  None taken.  Nice to meet you, even if it wasn’t under ideal circumstances.
KC:  Guess that’s the last coffee I’m gonna get from you huh?
BRYANT:  It doesn’t have to be.

THEY SMILE AT EACH OTHER.

AT PAULINA’S, JAKE IS KNOCKING ON THE DOOR.
Jake McKinnon

Paulina Cory

JAKE:  Paulina open up!

PAULINA OPENS THE DOOR WITH A WHITE TERRYCLOTH ROBE ON AND A TOWEL WRAPPED AROUND HER HAIR.

PAULINA:  You’re early.
JAKE:  You know we were bringing Bridget home today.
PAULINA:  Well I’m not ready yet as you can see.
JAKE:  Nothing I haven’t seen before.
PAULINA:  This is not time for jokes.  I’m trying to figure out what to wear.
JAKE:  We’re going to the hospital not the masquerade ball.
PAULINA:  Look I’ll be ready in a minute.

PAULINA GOES TO HER BEDROOM AND SHUTS THE DOOR.

JAKE:  I guess I’ll be here for an hour.

PAULINA OPENS THE BEDROOM DOOR.

PAULINA:  I heard that smart ass!

PAULINA SHUTS THE BEDROOM DOOR AGAIN.

--------------------------

AT THE HOSPITAL, THOMASINA IS IN HER OFFICE WITH LILY.  THOMASINA IS AT HER DESK AND LILY IS SITTING ACROSS FROM HER.

Lily Mason

Thomasina Mason

LILY:  I can’t believe you made me run those tests.  I have my doctors in California monitoring my condition.
THOMASINA:  Dr. Brackett?  Yes I talked to them.  He sent me your most recent results.  I wanted to see for myself.
LILY:  And what conclusions did you draw from it?
THOMASINA:  I don’t think you should go back to California.
LILY:  Look I can’t stay here.
THOMASINA:  Aunt Lily I have connections here.  I can get you into some clinical trials.
LILY:  It’s that bad?
THOMASINA:  Don’t look at it like that.
LILY:  I’m not gonna put my body through another round of chemo and radiation.  And now you’re suggesting a clinical trial.   God only knows what that’s gonna do to me.
THOMASINA:  It can’t be worse than what the cancer’s doing to you now Aunt Lily.  It’s like you’re throwing in the towel.  Don’t you want to get better?
LILY:  I’ve lived my life.  I lived a charmed life, but the best thing that ever happened to me, doesn’t want to forgive me.  I can die knowing that…I brought her in this world.

THOMASINA LOOKS UP AND SEES JOY.  LILY TURNS AROUND.

Joy Kramer

LILY:  Hi baby.
JOY:  Hi mom.  Can we talk?
THOMASINA:  I’ve…got rounds.

THOMASINA LEAVES THE OFFICE AND SHUTS THE DOOR.

LILY:  Look if you’re here to rail on me some more I really don’t wanna…
JOY:  I forgive you.

----------------------------

MEANWHILE, THOMASINA WALKS UP TO THE NURSE’S STATION AND CASS WALKS UP TO HER.

Cass Winthrop

CASS:  Hi Dr. Mason.
THOMASINA:  Cass.
CASS:  Can we talk privately?

THEY BOTH GO TO A SECLUDED CORNER AWAY FROM THE NURSE’S STATION.

THOMASINA:  What’s this about?
CASS:  About the internship.
THOMASINA:  What about it?
CASS:  I wanna know why my daughter was disqualified.
THOMASINA:  Disqualified?  Are you talking about a road race?
CASS:  This is no time to be facetious.  Charlie told me what you said, and I’m here to get your side of the story.

CAMERA PAN ON THOMASINA.  SLOW FADE OUT.  FADE IN TO THEME SONG

PART 2

LILY:  Maybe the cancer is affecting my hearing.  Did you just say…you forgive me?
JOY:  Yes…mom.  Whatever it is I’m holding on to is starting to…affect other areas of my life.
LILY:  Steven?
JOY:  We argued about it, and I walked out.
LILY:  Oh my God I hope you two didn’t break up.
JOY:  No.  We didn’t call it quits.  All I’m breaking up with now is my grudge.  You’re my mother.  I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.
LILY:  You got that right.
JOY:  I hate that it took an illness to bring us together.

LILY WALKS UP TO JOY.

LILY:  I hope you understand that you would not have been safe with me, not the life that I was living.  Thank God Thomasina and Carter took you in.  You turned out just the way I thought you would if they raised you.

JOY’S EYES WELL UP.

JOY:  Can you…tell me why?  Why did you….choose the streets over me?  It’s like you didn’t even want me.
LILY:  You couldn’t be more wrong.
JOY:  Was I in the way of the life you wanted?
LILY:  Marshall promised me that he would fulfill his financial responsibilities once he got out of school.  I couldn’t provide the life that you needed baby!
JOY:  You could have left me with my father.

LILY TURNS AROUND WITH HER BACK FACING JOY.

LILY:  He wasn’t any more ready to be a father than I was to be a mother.  I did the right thing by you.  I left you with your cousin because I loved you.
JOY:  I’m…not trying to blame you.  I’m just trying to understand.  I guess I never really will.
LILY:  I did a real stupid thing, but you…you are the BEST thing that has ever happened to me.

LILY TURNS AROUND AND FACES JOY.

LILY:  I want you to have better than me.  You’re smart and you’re pretty.  You got a great man.
JOY:  I’ve made mistakes, too.
LILY:  We all have sweety.   Now come give your mama a hug.

THEY HUG.

-----------------------

PAULINA COMES OUT OF HER BEDROOM.

PAULINA:  How do I look?
JAKE:  Like you got blue jeans and a blouse on.
PAULINA:  You’re no help.
JAKE:  Damned if I do and damned if I don’t right?
PAULINA:  You’re supposed to tell a woman that she looks good.
JAKE:  Okay you look good.

PAULINA THROWS A COUCH PILLOW AT JAKE.

JAKE:  What was that for?
PAULINA:  You don’t even mean it.
JAKE:  It took you thirty minutes to put on a pair of jeans and a blouse.
PAULINA:  You were actually sitting here counting?
JAKE:  You said it would only take a minute.
PAULINA:  I know what I said but…
JAKE:  You took a whole half hour to put on an outfit just to go to the hospital.

THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER FOR A FEW SECONDS.

PAULINA:  Well aren’t you ready to go?
JAKE:  Oh NOW you’re ready?

THEY LEAVE.

---------------------

THOMASINA:  My side of the story?  What the hell are you talking about?
CASS:  I think you know Dr. Mason.
THOMASINA:  So what exactly did your daughter tell you Cass?
CASS:  I did some digging into school records.  I compared Charlie’s and KC Burrell’s.  And then I went on the hospital website and read the qualifications on the position.
THOMASINA:  And what did you come up with?
CASS:  That according to the posting, and the records that I pulled, Charlie was the more qualified candidate, but yet you didn’t choose her, not because she didn’t meet the criteria.
THOMASINA:  What are you getting at?

CHARLIE WALKS UP AND SEES THEM FROM A SHORT DISTANCE, AND IS IN EARSHOT.

CASS:  You discriminated against Charlie.
THOMASINA:  That’s a very serious accusation, of which you have no proof.
CASS:  If the hospital board got wind of it, they’d start digging.

DANA KRAMER NOTICES CASS AND THOMASINA AS WELL AND IS ALSO IN EARSHOT.  CHARLIE WALKS AWAY, AND DANA APPROACHES THEM.

Dana Kramer

DANA:  Don’t say another word Thomasina.

FREEZE FRAME ON DANA.  SLOW FADE OUT.  END OF EPISODE 321
