· Charlie Winthrop Harrison alleges that Thomasina Mason didn’t hire her for the Public Relations Internship at Bay City Medical Center because she was white. Thomasina hired KC Burrell instead. Charlie sought legal advice from Cass. Charlie was unsure about suing Bay City Medical Center for fear of racial fallout

KC Burrell |
CHARLIE: It is though. Although I was clearly qualified to get it. Probably more than the person who actually got the position.
LINDSAY: You mean KC Burrell?
Lindsay Winthrop |
Charlie Winthop Harrison |
CHARLIE: I didn’t…mean it like that.
KC: Well how did you mean it? I got the position fair and square.
CHARLIE: I didn’t intend to imply that you weren’t qualified.
KC: It sure sounded like that to me.
LINDSAY: Charlie’s just a little confused as to why she didn’t get the internship. You know it’s one of those things where you just think you have everything in the bag, and then you don’t.
KC: It’s a great position. I do enjoy although it does have its challenges.
KC: Thank you.
BRYANT: Hey Charlie. Good to see you.
CHARLIE: Hi. Bryant right?
BRYANT: Yes sir!
KC: You guys know each other?
BRYANT: The woman that raised me is her mother. Frankie.
CHARLIE: My mother raised you?
BRYANT: Yeah she didn’t tell you?
CHARLIE: No she…didn’t. Did she raise you alone?
LINDSAY: Is everything okay?
CHARLIE: Yeah. That was Kirkland. He told me that Bridget is going home and the family’s gonna meet up there.
LINDSAY: I’m actually headed there, too. Let’s go.
CHARLIE: It was good to meet you KC.
KC: Yeah. Same here.
BRYANT: We gotta catch up Charlie.
CHARLIE: We sure do.
BRYANT: Are you talking about the internship?
KC: I guess she was the only person who applied for the position.
BRYANT: Look I’m…I’m sure it was just a misunderstanding. I don’t think she meant it like that. She didn’t even know that you were the one who got the job.
KC: She just sounded so…
BRYANT: Entitled?
KC: Look I don’t wanna go down that rabbit hole with you. No offense.
KC: Guess that’s the last coffee I’m gonna get from you huh?
BRYANT: It doesn’t have to be.

JAKE: You know we were bringing Bridget home today.
PAULINA: Well I’m not ready yet as you can see.
JAKE: Nothing I haven’t seen before.
PAULINA: This is not time for jokes. I’m trying to figure out what to wear.
JAKE: We’re going to the hospital not the masquerade ball.
PAULINA: Look I’ll be ready in a minute.
Lily Mason |
Thomasina Mason |
THOMASINA: Dr. Brackett? Yes I talked to them. He sent me your most recent results. I wanted to see for myself.
LILY: And what conclusions did you draw from it?
THOMASINA: I don’t think you should go back to California.
LILY: Look I can’t stay here.
THOMASINA: Aunt Lily I have connections here. I can get you into some clinical trials.
LILY: It’s that bad?
THOMASINA: Don’t look at it like that.
LILY: I’m not gonna put my body through another round of chemo and radiation. And now you’re suggesting a clinical trial. God only knows what that’s gonna do to me.
THOMASINA: It can’t be worse than what the cancer’s doing to you now Aunt Lily. It’s like you’re throwing in the towel. Don’t you want to get better?
LILY: I’ve lived my life. I lived a charmed life, but the best thing that ever happened to me, doesn’t want to forgive me. I can die knowing that…I brought her in this world.
Joy Kramer |
JOY: Hi mom. Can we talk?
THOMASINA: I’ve…got rounds.
JOY: I forgive you.
Cass Winthrop |
THOMASINA: Cass.
CASS: Can we talk privately?
CASS: About the internship.
THOMASINA: What about it?
CASS: I wanna know why my daughter was disqualified.
THOMASINA: Disqualified? Are you talking about a road race?
CASS: This is no time to be facetious. Charlie told me what you said, and I’m here to get your side of the story.
JOY: Yes…mom. Whatever it is I’m holding on to is starting to…affect other areas of my life.
LILY: Steven?
JOY: We argued about it, and I walked out.
LILY: Oh my God I hope you two didn’t break up.
JOY: No. We didn’t call it quits. All I’m breaking up with now is my grudge. You’re my mother. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.
LILY: You got that right.
JOY: I hate that it took an illness to bring us together.
LILY: You couldn’t be more wrong.
JOY: Was I in the way of the life you wanted?
LILY: Marshall promised me that he would fulfill his financial responsibilities once he got out of school. I couldn’t provide the life that you needed baby!
JOY: You could have left me with my father.
JOY: I’m…not trying to blame you. I’m just trying to understand. I guess I never really will.
LILY: I did a real stupid thing, but you…you are the BEST thing that has ever happened to me.
JOY: I’ve made mistakes, too.
LILY: We all have sweety. Now come give your mama a hug.
JAKE: Like you got blue jeans and a blouse on.
PAULINA: You’re no help.
JAKE: Damned if I do and damned if I don’t right?
PAULINA: You’re supposed to tell a woman that she looks good.
JAKE: Okay you look good.
PAULINA: You don’t even mean it.
JAKE: It took you thirty minutes to put on a pair of jeans and a blouse.
PAULINA: You were actually sitting here counting?
JAKE: You said it would only take a minute.
PAULINA: I know what I said but…
JAKE: You took a whole half hour to put on an outfit just to go to the hospital.
JAKE: Oh NOW you’re ready?
CASS: I think you know Dr. Mason.
THOMASINA: So what exactly did your daughter tell you Cass?
CASS: I did some digging into school records. I compared Charlie’s and KC Burrell’s. And then I went on the hospital website and read the qualifications on the position.
THOMASINA: And what did you come up with?
CASS: That according to the posting, and the records that I pulled, Charlie was the more qualified candidate, but yet you didn’t choose her, not because she didn’t meet the criteria.
THOMASINA: What are you getting at?
THOMASINA: That’s a very serious accusation, of which you have no proof.
CASS: If the hospital board got wind of it, they’d start digging.
