Iris and Dana tell their stories about Mac Cory’s grandson

PART 1

AT THE CENTER, DANA AND THOMASINA SIT ACROSS FROM EACH OTHER AS THEY CONVERSE..
Dr. Thomasina Mason

Dana Kramer

DANA:  I wanted him to finish school you know?
THOMASINA:  I know girl, but you’re not gonna be able to shield him anymore.
DANA:  Yeah it’s...the time is coming.  Bryant’s gotta learn the truth about who he is.
THOMASINA:  It doesn’t seem like you’re ready to tell him.
DANA:  That’s because I’m not.
THOMASINA:  I think you need to tell him as soon as possible.  You don’t want your son to resent you.
DANA:  I know I know.

DANA TAKES HER TABLET OUT OF HER PURSE, POWERS IT ON, AND SHOWS THOMASINA SOMETHING.

THOMASINA:  What’s this?  BAYCorP?
DANA:  That’s an article from today’s business section of the Herald.  KBAY and Cory Productions officially merged today.  They’re expecting the SEC to approve it.
THOMASINA:  Cory Productions used to be Cory Publishing right?
DANA:  Right.  Did you read the part where Iris Spaulding was voted out?
THOMASINA (looking down at the tablet):  Now I see it.  She must be stark raving mad.  She came back to Bay City after I left.  I heard about everything that she did to Mac.
DANA:  Yeah.  She feels entitled to that company, and the fear that I have...is that my son is gonna get caught up in their war.

---------

IRIS IS IN HER SUITE SITTING ON HER COUCH IN THE LIGHTLY DIMMED LIVING ROOM WITH HER LEGS CROSSED.  SHE REACHES ACROSS ON THE COFFEE TABLE FOR THE BOTTLE OF RED WINE, AND POURS HERSELF A GLASS.  SHE IS WEARING A TOWEL WRAPPED AROUND HER HEAD, A WHITE TERRYCLOTH ROBE, AND THE ELEVATOR DOORS OPEN.  RUSS MATTHEWS WALKS DOWN THE STAIRS AND SITS ACROSS FROM IRIS ON THE CHAIR.
Iris Spaulding

Dr. Russ Matthews

RUSS:  You called?
IRIS:  You got here pretty quick.

IRIS GETS UP AND WALKS TOWARD HER CABINET WITH THE WINE GLASSES IN IT.

RUSS:  How many have you had?
IRIS:  Errrr a couple maybe?
RUSS:  Nooo I think you’ve had more than that.
IRIS:  Want one?
RUSS:  Sure why not?

IRIS PLACES THE GLASS ON A COASTER ON THE COFFEE TABLE IN FRONT OF RUSS.

IRIS:  I came home, took a nice hot shower, and now I’m relaxing with my wine.  Well certainly you don’t expect me to get it for you.  Pour it yourself.

RUSS GRABS THE BOTTLE OF WINE, POURS HIMSELF A GLASS AND LOOKS UP AT IRIS AS HE PLACES THE BOTTLE BACK ON THE TABLE AND SIPS HIS WINE.

RUSS:  Judging from that reaction I take it the meeting didn’t go well.
IRIS:  Not at all.  The BAYCorP kangaroo court has made its ruling.
RUSS:  And what was that?
IRIS:  Rachel, Devin Lucas Hutchins, and Rachel’s children have decided that I am out of the company.
RUSS:  Wow.
IRIS:  You should’ve seen their faces.  Rachel, Amanda, Matt, Devin, and Paulina.  They had the look of victory.
RUSS:  But Mac built that company.  It should every bit yours as it is theirs.
IRIS:  Well well well someone sees it my way.  Hmm.

IRIS SIPS HER WINE.

RUSS:  So how did they pull it off?
IRIS:  They made a stupid by-law...that...that a convicted felon could not work for them in a high level role.
RUSS:  Ooooh.

IRIS FORCEFULLY PLACES HER GLASS ON THE COASTER.

IRIS:  I did my time for shooting Carl!  Who the hell do they think they are?
RUSS:  Okay Iris.  Calm down.
IRIS:  Don’t tell me to calm down!  They brought up things that happened almost 30 years ago.  They’re so damned hateful!

IRIS POURS HERSELF ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE, DRINKS IT ALL, AND PLACES HER GLASS BACK ON THE COASTER.

RUSS:  All that stuff about...The Chief and...Carl’s shooting.  I bet Rachel said she couldn’t trust you, but...you’re good at business.
IRIS:  Yeah that’s what that old bitch said.  They really think they’ve won.

IRIS GETS UP AND WALKS SLOWLY TOWARD THE STAIRS.

IRIS:  They’ve forced me to use my ace in the hole.  I’m gonna grind that new company to dust.  They’ll have nothing.  I’m gonna destroy BAYcorP.
RUSS:  What’s going on?  What are you thinking about?

IRIS TURNS BACK AROUND, SITS BACK DOWN ON THE COUCH, AND POURS ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE.

IRIS:  For you to understand what I’m about to do, I’ve gotta tell you the backstory.  The story...of Mac Cory’s grandson.

-----

THOMASINA:  Well he’s about to graduate college.  How are his grades?
DANA:  He’s got a 3.9 average.
THOMASINA:  So maybe you’re not giving him enough credit.  It seems like...it’s inevitable that he’s gonna find out who he really is, but maybe he will handle himself better than you might think.  If he’s got a 3.9 GPA, then he’s pretty smart.
DANA:  Yeah, but Iris is...she has a way of finding things out.  If she finds out who Bryant is…
THOMASINA:  She’s gonna use him to destroy that company.

PART 2

RUSS:  Wow...alright.

RUSS TAKES A SIP OF HIS WINE AND PLACES ON THE COASTER ON THE COFFEE TABLE.

RUSS:  Mac originally left a third of Cory Publishing to you, Amanda and Rachel right?
IRIS:  Yep.
RUSS:  But a previous will came about that Mac actually left his fortune, including Cory Publishing, to his eldest child.
IRIS:  And that child would’ve been Michael.  Except...it wasn’t.
RUSS:  You mean there’s more to this?
IRIS:  Much, much more.

------

DANA:  Sometimes I wish...his father was still here.
THOMASINA:  He was raised in a loving home, right?
DANA:  Brad did me a huge favor.  I owe him big time.  It really helped to keep Bryant obscure.
THOMASINA:  So Bryant doesn’t know why you allowed him to be raised by Brad?

DANA DOESN’T RESPOND AND JUST LOOKS AT THOMASINA.

THOMASINA:  Oh my God.  You mean you haven’t told your son anything about this?  You took a big risk.  You could lose him.
DANA:  He knows that I’m his mother.  I visited him often.
THOMASINA:  But you just didn’t stay long.  He had to have been wondering why.
DANA:  He’ll understand once he realizes that I had to protect him.
THOMASINA:  You hope.
DANA:  I would have raised him myself, but…
THOMASINA:  But what?
DANA:  His father left me after I got pregnant.

--------

RUSS:  So you’re saying that Mac had an affair with Clara Hudson.
IRIS (looking inside her glass as she sips her wine):  Right.
RUSS:  So Michael and Martin Hudson were twins and she gave them away.
IRIS:  No she didn’t give Michael away.  Only Martin.  She raised Michael and John.
RUSS:  But Mac only fathered one of the twins?

IRIS LAUGHS.

IRIS:  It was so easy.  Michael returned to Bay City, he went to see his poor mother, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s.  She wasn’t lucid.  One of the hospital workers told me that they heard her reminiscing about her affair with Mac.
RUSS:  This is a fascinating story.  What happened next?
IRIS:  Oh it’s fascinating indeed, because I fooled them.  Michael and Matthew decided they’re gonna looking for evidence to see if Michael was Mac’s son.  Some men can be so stupid.  I left clues leading them to believe that.  I planted all the evidence, and they fell hook line and sinker.
RUSS:  So they thought Michael was Mac’s eldest son.
IRIS:  For a while.
RUSS:  But Martin is actually Mac’s eldest child.
IRIS:  I don’t even know how they could begin to think that Michael was Mac’s son.  He and I were involved.

IRIS POURS WINE INTO HER GLASS, SIPS, AND LOOKS STRAIGHT AHEAD.

IRIS:  I loved Michael, and I think he loved me, too.
RUSS:  You think?
IRIS:  He didn’t love me nearly as much as he loved Donna.  She will always be the love of his life.
RUSS:  Finish the story.
IRIS:  Okay, so, Martin got married to an up and coming lawyer named Dana Kramer, but he didn’t stay long.
RUSS:  Where was Michael?
IRIS:  Reginald Love was holding him prisoner.   What most people don’t know is that Reginald knew about Martin’s child...and he threatened to hurt him if he didn’t come to Bay City.
-----
THOMASINA:  Why would Martin do that?  How could he have left you while you were still pregnant?
DANA:  Reginald threatened to hurt our child if he didn’t do what he asked.
THOMASINA:  Gosh that man is unspeakably evil.  What did Reginald want him to do?
DANA:  Assume Michael’s life in Bay City.
THOMASINA:  Unbelievable.
DANA:  Then two years after he left I received divorce papers.
THOMASINA:  Did you contest it?
DANA:  No. I couldn’t do that.   I didn’t want Reginald to get any hint of where my son was.  I had to keep Bryant hidden, well, as hidden as I possibly could.

-------

RUSS:  Are you serious?
IRIS:  Very.
RUSS:  So you’re gonna get Martin to take what’s rightfully his?
IRIS:  I can’t do that.  Martin Hudson is dead.  He died trying to keep his niece Vicky from sleeping with Shane Roberts.
RUSS:  Was he married?
IRIS:  No.  He was divorced at the time of his death.
RUSS:  Did he have any children?

IRIS LOOKS AT RUSS, SMILES, AND TAKES ANOTHER SIP OF HER WINE.

RUSS:  Whatever children Martin Hudson had...inherits all of Mac’s fortune.
IRIS:  Bingo.
RUSS:  How many children?
IRIS:  Just one.  Bryant Kramer.
RUSS:  Do you know where Bryant is?
IRIS:  Maybe. All I know is that he doesn’t know anything about being Mac Cory’s grandson...but I do...and he’s gonna help me rock Rachel’s world.  Oh they’ll never see it coming.
RUSS:  So Dana Kramer is his mother.  Where is she?
IRIS:  She’s right here in Bay City.

-------

DANA:  If Martin was still alive, he would have inherited a fortune according to Mac’s will, but he’s dead and he and I were divorced before he died, so Bryant gets it all.
THOMASINA:  That could get ugly.
DANA:  I want him to have a normal life.  I still do.  He was practically born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but I need him to learn the value of hard work.  Nothing is given freely.  Everything is earned.
THOMASINA:  You’re right about that.  Gotta scratch, claw and fight for every little thing.
DANA:  He’s gonna come into a hell of a lot of money and power.  How does that not get to his head?  I might lose my son one way or the other.
THOMASINA:  So what are you gonna do?
DANA:  I’m gonna buckle my seat belt, and brace myself for a real bumpy ride.

THOMASINA LOOKS AT A TEXT ON HER CELL PHONE.

THOMASINA:  Oh no.
DANA:  Everything okay?
THOMASINA:  That was Dr. Hudson.  I gotta get back to the hospital.

THOMASINA GETS UP.

THOMASINA:  That story was...dramatic...I would swear it was a soap opera.  Good luck.
DANA:  Thank you.  I’m gonna need it.

------

IRIS:  This stays between us.
RUSS:  Of course it does, but I have to admit, Rachel is my friend, too.  I don’t wanna be caught in the middle of it.
IRIS:  You don’t have to be.  Just know, Bryant Kramer is gonna be my ticket to the destruction of BAYCorP.

IRIS SIPS HER WINE AND SMILES.

  1. That's a whole lotta history right there.

Wow. What a tightly-focused episode. Really in-depth into the history of Bryant Kramer from two sides. His arrival in Bay City is gonna rock everyone's world.

I really liked seeing Iris and Russ discuss things. I feel like Iris needed a confidant, and I still feel like she needs one that isn't quite so torn between alligences like Russ is. If Iris isn't careful, it could blow up in her face. I wonder how drunk she'll end up before the night is over, haha.

Dana and Thomasina's conversation was also enlightening. I enjoyed hearing Dana's uncertainty regarding Bryant's birthright. Obviously he is due a lot of money from Martin's estate, but she knows that it could easily corrupt him. I, for the sake of drama, hope it does. But we'll see what happens there.

I also love that you understand that the true magic and thing that set AW apart was the friendships. You have brought Dana and Thomasina into that same trope as many others in Bay City, and it's very smart. I look forward to seeing more of them.

Great, tight episode. Cleared a lot of history up. Thank you for it. And great work, as always!
